Born in 1953. Lives in Paris.
A former student at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, he joined French daily Libération as a journalist in 1978, and from 1981-1986 was picture editor. In 1986 he founded Agence VU’ for photographers; and then, in 1998, Galerie VU’, which he ran until 2006. He has since been an associate professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière.
Christian Caujolle was artistic director of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d’Arles in 1997, and of the Phnom Penh Photo festival in Cambodia in November 2008. He has also curated many events including the PhotoEspaña festival in 2001; “Contemporary photographs: the fondation HSBC for the photography laureates” at the Rencontres d’Arles 2007 ; the “Anders Petersen, Sète 2007-2008” exhibition at Musée Paul Valéry in Sète; “Richard Avedon en couleurs” exhibition at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2008 . In 2009 Christian Caujolle nominated Sean Lee for the Discovery Award of the Rencontres d’Arles and he was co-curator in the exhibition “Sweet dreams of memory” at the Rencontres d’Arles 2009. In 2010 Christian Caujolle was co-curator in the exhibition “A journey through the photography collection of Marin Karmitz” at the Rencontres d’Arles.
In 2005, the book he wrote to accompany the 50th-anniversary exhibition of World Press Photo, Things As They Are: Photography in Context, won the Book Infinity Award. Circonstances Particulières (two volumes, published by Actes Sud) discusses his intimate relationship with the photographic medium.
