‘Around here, drugs and alcohol kill more people than radioactivity,’ Kiril says pointing at the grave of his best friend, who died when he fell off a balcony at a party. Slavutych, Ukraine’s newest city, was built from scratch to house Chernobyl’s evacuated nuclear power plant workers after the disaster. It’s a comfortable place to live but has no future. For four years, I photographed its young people becoming adults while fixing their parents’ mistakes.
