Simon Norfolk, Prix Pictet, Théâtre Antique
The Prix Pictet, founded in 2008 by the leading Swiss private bank, Pictet & Cie, is the world’s most prestigious prize in photography and sustainability. Its mission is to reveal outstanding photography applied to confront the most pressing social and environmental challenges of today. For each new cycle, the Prix Pictet adopts a different theme. The first four were Water (winner: Benoît Aquin), Earth (winner: Nadav Kander), Growth (winner: Mitch Epstein) and Power (winner: Luc Delahaye). For this year’s Prix Pictet Commission, Pictet & Cie supports the work done in Afghanistan by Medair, a humanitarian organisation based in Switzerland. Pictet & Cie chose to give the commission to photographer Simon Norfolk. The first public presentation of the photographs resulting from his fieldtrips to Afghanistan will be the grand finale of a special screening at the Théâtre Antique. The theme, finalists’ exhibition sites and the jury for the fifth Prix Pictet will also be announced during the evening. Simon Norfolk’s photographs for the Prix Pictet Commission will be exhibited at Somerset House in London in October 2013.
