Lives and Works in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Sema Bekirovic is a visual artist whose work could be described as playful conceptualism. She uses different media, mainly video, photography and installations. Sema’s work is often inspired by scientific ideas, and deals with the supposed difference between culture and nature, and the obtaining of (and letting go of) control. Sometimes she deploys animals in her work, though not really as subject (or object), but in a more collaboratory fashion. Sema studied at the Rietveld Academie and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited at De Appel (Amsterdam), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Hayward Gallery Project Space (London), Dutch Culture Institute (Shanghai) and on Times Square (NYC).
Sema Bekirovic will present her work at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2014, taking part in the exhibition Small Universe at the Atelier de Chaudronnerie.
