Born in 1949 in the County of Durham, England.
Lives and works in Liverpool.
John Davies grew up in both coal mining and farming communities. After graduating he visited Ireland where he started to photograph the interaction between sky and land. By the 1980’s, he started to document the legacy of the Industrial Revolution in shaping cities and urban landscapes. From 1984 he has worked on numerous landscape projects throughout Europe. His first command in France documented 10 communes in the territory of Belfort in 1987. Since then he has continued to regularly photograph various landscapes in France. In 2008 he was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Prize for his exhibition and book The British Landscape, 2006.
John Davies presented his work at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2013: France England ; and in 2006, as part of the exhibition Monuments and Landscapes, commissioned by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Heritage Agency.
