León Ferrari’s vast artistic output includes works such as Cuadro escrito (1964), a piece of capital importance for international conceptual art, and La Civilización Occidental y Cristiana (1965), the assemblage of an American fighter plane and a Santeria Christ, a work that epitomises the aesthetic and political avant-garde of 20th-century art. Ferrari left Argentina in 1976 for political reasons, settling in São Paulo, Brazil, where he resumed his metal sculpting and explored diverse techniques: photocopying, postal art, heliography, engraving, art books, etc.

His exhibitions have prompted passionate debate and strong reactions from supporters of the Catholic Church.Ferrari has held shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; the Pinacoteca, São Paulo; the Centro Cultural Recoleta in Buenos Aires, Documenta in Kassel (2007); the Mercosur Biennale, Porto Alegre (2007); the São Paulo Biennale (2006), and the Venice Biennale (2007), where he won the Golden Lion.
